STMicroelectronics Motor Control Solutions

STMicroelectronics Motor Control Solutions are a portfolio of products for low-voltage motor control applications. These products include monolithic driver ICs, power MOSFETs, IGBTs, gate drivers, power modules, and dedicated microcontrollers to address a broad range of applications. STMicroelectronics has boards and reference designs for Low Voltage Motors, which include < 100V all the way to High Voltage Motors 600V up to 1200V. Permanent Magnet synchronous motors and Brushless DC motors are replacing DC brush motors in more applications for advantages like higher efficiency, quieter operation, and better reliability. Despite the different structures, all three-phase permanent magnet motors (BLDC, PMSM) are driven by a pulse-width-modulated (PWM) three-phase bridge (three half-bridges) to supply the motor with variable frequency and amplitude of voltages and currents.

Low voltage – 1.8V up to 75V

STMicroelectronics STSPIN drivers for 3-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors include power drivers in a 3-phase bridge configuration and integrated solutions with built-in decoding logic for Hall-effect sensors. They also feature a PWM current controller to autonomously drive a BLDC motor through motion commands coming from the motor or motion control system host – a microcontroller, DSP, or FPGA. In addition to the integration of the power MOSFET and the associated driving circuitry, they include protection and diagnostic features for over-temperature, over-current, and under-voltage conditions, resulting in robust and reliable designs. Available in a wide selection of space-saving, thermally-enhanced packages, STSPIN 3-phase BLDC motor driver ICs provide a ready-to-use and optimized solution for motor and motion control systems in a wide range of voltage and current ratings and they are part of STMicroelectronics 10 and 15 years longevity program.

Medium voltage – up to 250V

The STSPIN32F025x system-in-package is an extremely integrated solution for driving three-phase applications, helping designers to reduce PCB area and overall bill-of-material.

It embeds an STM32F031x6x7 featuring an Arm® 32-bit Cortex®-M0 CPU and a 250V triple half-bridge gate driver, able to drive N-channel power MOSFETs or IGBTs.

The integrated MCU allows performing FOC, 6-step sensorless, and other advanced driving algorithms including the speed control loop.

High voltage – 600V up to 1200V

The STSPIN32F060x system-in-package is an extremely integrated solution for driving three-phase applications, helping reduce PCB area, and overall bill-of-material.

It embeds an STM32F031x6x7 featuring an Arm 32-bit Cortex-M0 CPU and a 600V triple half-bridge gate driver, able to drive N-channel power MOSFETs or IGBTs.

The integrated MCU allows performing FOC, 6-step sensorless, and other advanced driving algorithms including the speed control loop.

The STPOWER portfolio of highly integrated, high-efficiency power modules for flexible, compact, and robust solutions from tens of watts to several kilowatts, helps to reduce design time and efforts. It covers a wide range of voltage classes, current ratings, and topologies so that virtually any conceivable application can benefit from the outstanding performance, efficiency, and longevity these devices offer.
